I think I have gotten the hanging of this speech. It was easy enough to watch the television and try to pick up some of the sayings. But...I've tried them before and they seem to be a little off. People give me strange looks when I asked them about stopping to smell the plants.

Am I using the wrong words?

It's 'stop and smell the roses,' actually. But you were close.

Vegetation is vegetation..right? Is there a difference?

Considering people are used to hearing 'roses' I'd think there would be a difference.

"Stop and smell the roses," is telling someone to relax and pay attention to life.

What does a rose have to deal with paying attention to life?

"A rose by any other word would smell as sweet."

Perhaps you should invest in a book of common American slang?

Perhaps. I'm not a huge fan of books... though I have taken to watching television.

Your lost then. Books are a wonderful way to expand one's vocabulary.

If you're looking for common uses of slang you could watch the melodramatic soaps that are so popular right now.
