What the hell does 'who was phone' mean?
Tangentially related, what's up with 'fishes', 'sheeps' and 'cereals'.

Who was ... phone?
Dude, if that's a new slang term, I don't think I'm following.

Nice to know I'm not the only one.
Not that I'm any good at following English slang.

Me neither. Japanese. I've got a pretty good amount of English down, but the slang terms confuse me forever.

French.
So I'm taking this means you won't be able to explain the fishes/sheeps thing to me, either.

I don't know. I only heard it twice but it's enough that I don't get it.
I looked it up and it's apparently about some story on 4chan but it still makes no sense. Why would people use it in random conversations?

After a few minutes of... Googling [ooc: He actually means "A FEW HOURS".], I am more confused than ever.
I'll never fit in this way.

Research didn't help me much, nope.
The wonders of internet memes.

...Off the top of my head, I have to assume they must have meant "who was on the phone," as... honestly that's the only thing that makes sense.

No. It was 'who was phone'.
Which is why I'm asking about it, because it doesn't make any sense.

You're sure they didn't misspeak? ...Perhaps it was someone named Phone? You never know.

Apparently it's an internet meme but I'm still trying to get why would anyone use it in a conversation.
Except to try and look really stupid.

See? I found that, and sort of understand it even though it's completely stupid.
But out of the blue, in an actual discussion, what is 'who was phone' supposed to mean?

[Obviously very amused.]
I feel I have to answer something like "What? Her mother was a phone?"
