the first step is always the hardest one.

[this post starts out as a video post, giving you a quick glimpse of a girl guy with long blue hair, before Alto decides to switch it to a voice post instead.]

...uhm. [awkwardawkwardawkward]

Alto Saotome, and I'm new.

'Hello, and welcome' is about all I can say for the time being.

As far as the whole being 'new' part? It's not a permanent thing - you'll get used to how things are done around here.

[He peers into the camera for a moment, before he sighs. Then, he straightens himself out before he speaks.]

No, no, considering the nature of the name and its connections to 'royalty' and everything, it's to be expected.

So, where are you from? I ask since this country is quite large.

I'm from Taipei, Taiwan.

Japan. Kyoto, to be specific.

Ah, Japan! Our country has a great relationship with your own. Well, considering our national history.

Kyoto... I remember going there for a m... small one week trip. Very nice city. Lots of pretty Japanese Gardens. Ah, and the Golden Temple - I remember taking several pictures of that one!

Ah yes, guess so. I mean- I grew up there, been to the temples plenty of times...

But I'm glad you liked it.

It was a great trip overall. I didn't have any problems, and I had some great memories of that city, along with some people over there.

How long have you been in America, if you're originally from Japan?

Ah, just... yesterday, actually. Lost control of my powers at a dorm party, and then got carted over to the Institute.

[Hello look of surprise!]

Yesterday? Talk about getting used to things... I bet you haven't really felt all that much of the culture shock that most people go through, especially from back east.

It's definitely going to take a while for you to get used to everything around here. No wonder you're still not used to.

I'm sorry, I didn't know.

Yeah, starting from introducing myself with my given name first.

Westerners are so weird, requiring one to use their given name first, instead of the family name, right?

You'll learn little by little eventually, and some things might surprise you.

From what I know, there are a number of students here from Japan, so if you want to get together with them, all you'd have to do is talk to them, or make a post to ask if anyone's from there, and they'll more than likely reply rather quickly. Some have been here more time than others, so maybe they can help you with that.

Or, if you want, you can ask me. I've been in America for quite a while.

I can get used to it, I suppose. I mean, it's not my first time in a boarding school. Can't be all that different, eh?

Five words: Mutant Boarding School in America.

It is the first of its kind, and there are many that tend to use their abilities throughout the day.

Like... those with elemental abilities use them in various ways, and the telekinetics make their things float around if they want don't feel like carrying their things. And some technopaths can take their notes on their computers without even laying a finger on it.

I'm one of the few that doesn't actively try to do so. Then again, that's because I can't really do much of anything aside from heal myself from anything and everything.

And yes, I've tested it out.

My ability isn't all that useful anyway...

You have your ability for a reason - and since you're barely getting used to the idea, you just have to give it some time before you can think of any practical applications of your own abilities. And don't worry, I won't pry if you still don't feel like talking about it.

I suppose people will find out about it eventually... just, I'm planning to not mention for as long as I can help it.

Sorry about that.

No, don't be sorry. You have your reasons for wanting to keep your abilities under wraps. I respect that.

Well, I guess I'll leave you be to settle into your dorm. But if you want someone to show you around the school grounds, don't hesitate to ask me, okay?
