[ he wakes up suddenly, with that sickening lurch that makes you believe you've just fallen backwards off something too high and too unstable.
It's a jarring sensation when it actually occurs to him that he is Sasuke, in Sasuke's dorm room. Of course he's still in bed, the blanket in an inexplicable bundle at his feet, but he feels like he's just run miles. Or drowned. Or both. It takes a few moments for his eyes to adjust to the light filtering in from the window, during which he is hazily confused as to why there's a window in the cell, or why everything is a dull shade of blue from the moonlight when everything should be red.
Carefully, he pieces the dream back together. It's surprisingly easy.
And then he bolts upright and manages to rush into the bathroom before he throws up. ]

[ When Itachi opens his eyes, he is disoriented to find himself back in his cell, where even the dim lighting is harsh after what felt like an eternity without sight. His heart is pounding as if it meant to force itself out of his body via the shortest route possible.
He almost starts coughing just from the shock, but he catches an echo, something like a cool hand against a fevered forehead, that says without sound calm down, breathe, it was just a dream, everything's going to be fine...
Itachi knows that touch.
After collecting himself, he feels for the source, the connection, and sends a simple, tentative thought: Sasuke? ]

[ the act of snapping someone out of a nightmare was ingrained nine years ago and never really faded; he and Naruto both had their fair share of them when they were alone - by choice or not - at the orphanage, and the calming effect became a necessity when Naruto's violent side began triggering. Sasuke doesn't even notice it until he's done dry-heaving and has collected himself, at which point he notices that his isn't the only mind being collected and calmed as he concentrates on breathing steadily.
- Sasuke? -
The last layer of sleep- and nightmare-inducted heaviness lifts at the mental touch, and he forces himself not to shut out the link. Details are filtering back.
So he sends a wordless acknowledgement - it would have been Itachi's name if he had been younger - energy pooling in his eyes in case it's a trick and he needs to wrench himself away at a moment's notice. ]
[ Acknowledgement comes back through the link, simple and unfiltered by words or any more complex thought. For a moment, Itachi just lets it wash over him; the feeling of no longer being alone and empty creates a corresponding feeling of relief so powerful it's hard to think around.
Itachi pieces together some of the reactions he had felt on Sasuke's end right after he woke up, and responds to Sasuke with apology/remorse over the way the nightmare had affected him. Nothing too powerful or complicated. Itachi's not sure he's ready for it, right now. ]
