Really.?!

We're in a Depression with record Unemployment as we're trying to be the last industrialized country to get Universal Health Care, but apparently people are more concerned with Obama's US Birth Certificate. This is after 2 separate declarations by the state of Hawaii that he is a US-national, settling the matter. So what do the time-wasting fucks ( Read more... )

Setting aside the Obama issue (which seems to be a load of BS), the legislation probably isn't a bad idea for the future. The fact that it's coming at this time of huge partisan arguments shouldn't obfuscate its usefulness, IMO.

Maybe it's not a bad idea. But it's not an immediate, pressing matter that will affect the lives of millions. Which we have plenty of right now. I agree, they should be SOLELY focused on getting this country back on its feet, not on little things like this.

Congress deals with hundreds of bills all of the time. Actually there are thousands introduced every year. Most never get anywhere for a variety of reasons. It appears that this one has been introduced, has a few co-sponsors, and is sitting in committee. This is a similar fate to the other thousands of bills that are otherwise ignored.

It will be alive as long as this Congress is in session, until the end of next year. Maybe it will see some action, but I doubt it. In the meantime, I'm certain that it's not taking up anyone else's time besides the frothing discussions both sides are having about Obama and a birth certificate. That is to say, most Congressional representatives are going about their business and this isn't adding to it at all.

Not only is it a bad idea, it is a colossal waste of time and resources. It, by its very nature, is DESIGNED to obfuscate the real and relevant and pressing issues that we face right now. "Pay no attention to this important piece of legislation... we have to make certain that our presidential candidates have a valid original birth certificate for future candidacies."

Applause goes to xi_o_teaz on this one. I agree with this sentiment 100%

Why should we care so much anyway? Shouldn't our candidate be the best representative for the USA that we can put forth irregardless of when and where they were born? Shouldn't our candidate have the best interests of the country as a whole be the priority and not whether or not that candidate's mother gave birth to them inside US borders?

Some immigrants are more Loyal US American Citizens than those that were born here.

Well, actually, Obama's citizenship is a bit more contentious than that. Recently a high-profile incident occurred where a soldier refused deployment on the grounds of Obama not having legitimate command. The soldier argued that the Constitution made explicit demands on his service, and he was unwilling to deploy without having confidence in the Commander in Chief's citizenship. The military court ruled in his favor.

At some point someone dragged up one of Obama's student loan applications, in which he had allegedly indicated being a foreign national. With a little effort, I could probably find a reference.

As well, it's not like there isn't reason to suspect he might be foreign-born, given his family's history ( ... )

More follow-ups (partially for my own edification):

A 'certificate of live birth' is "not the same as a birth certificate and a birth announcement is not accepted as proof for the purpose of securing government issued ID."

Hawaii again declares Obama's birth certificate real

Gibbs: birth certificate controversy is madeup fictional nonsense

Soldier sues Obama: where's the birth certificate?

Soldier questions eligibility; doubts president's authority

Has a smoking gun been found?

Obama's birth certificate challenger keeps going

Obama's birth certificate: is Alan Keyes a sore loser?

Here's an incisive refutation:

The hoaxers have claimed that this certificate is a fake, but have yet to produce any evidence to back that claim up. Their approach, straight out of the Napoleonic code, is to make continual accusations and demand that the accused prove their innocence. They hope that simply by repeating a claim often enough, useful idiots will come to believe it. But here in the United States, we follow the principle that the ( ... )

Shot in the face....YUP, you said it brotha!. Start with the system it's self, then go at some of these silly figureheads.

In all honesty, the president is just that, a figure head. He has little to no actual power given by the system. His power lies in his/her/their ability to speak to the people and persuade them. This elected person doesn't just *make* laws from the air, they endorse things and people listen.

Having said that, I could care less if the president were Mickey Mouse. As long as they aren't too power hungry and corrupt. Thank the stars the last regime is having to regroup. Let's get back to putting people to work. Make them earn their stuff. Give them a sense of self pride and accomplishment again. That is what *I* think we need. Some good old Eisenhower like bridge building. Let's end the war so we can start the post war revival....who cares if the guy is from some place other than here. We elected him already. Get on with it.
