Decide what route you want to take.

I write mostly Rogue/Gambit AUs in Movieverse, but principle is the same. I like mutant abilities. I only rarely bother with making it politically important. But it IS important to the characters. I just dig in deep to their own little worlds that revolve around them and let them decide when to focus on it and when not to.
