Story 265: "Ever After" by Jill Selby

Jun 01, 2016 18:56

I love time travel stories and "Ever After" is one of my all-time favorites. This fic has everything: Mulder/Scully UST, strong original characters, a suspenseful plot, and a memorable X-File. But why take my word for it when you can read an excerpt...

Good to know! She's excellent and we haven't read much of her oeuvre.

Oh, Jill Selby! One of my favorite authors from back in the day. I will read this when Real Life leaves me alone and gives me a chance to do anything.

I highly enjoyed this. The suspense was built and maintained very well, the plot unfolded in a way that made sense and yet still kept me on the edge of my seat, the characterization was good, and overall this really felt like something that could easily have been a good episode of the show.

I have to admit to being a sucker for a story that plays around with time, and since that's not something the show did much, it's lovely to read good fanfic that does. (Also, since I'm relatively new to X-Files fic - any other time travel or similar fics that people would recommend? I don't think I've read any except for this one and The Ghost of You.)

There is a fairly complete list of fic here: Time Travel.

Recommendations?

From that list, I enjoyed "1947" by Jess. It's at Gossamer and also here: Travel in Time Archive.

"The Sin Eater" by Jane Mortimer is one of my favorite fics for all time and all fandoms. At Gossamer.

I remember liking "Journey" by Zuffy. Gossamer.

One of my favorite post-IWTB fics has time travel as an element but it's a twist ending and I don't want to ruin it for you. If you're reading through our discussion posts you'll get to it eventually. It's not on the time travel list, which surprises me, frankly. It's a very well known fic by an excellent writer.

"The Ghost of You" isn't on the list either. Huh.

Hey, I am fairly new here. I love the fanfic of Jill. I can only recommend "Paper Saints" one of the best stories...

I remember liking "Paper Saints," too, but this story stayed with me much longer. I think the theme of love transcending time and space fits Mulder and Scully to a T.

This was a great read. Densely packed with tension, interesting xfile, secondary characters that stood as foils for M&S, pertinent themes, in-character depictions of moose and squirrel. This would have been an excellent episode.

I liked how, at the end, Scully's disappointment over the writing all over the cave is juxtaposed with Mulder's enthusiasm about it. For him seeing the "truth" on the walls is sufficiently thrilling, yet for her the bleak reality that it will never be scientifically accepted and in fact will result in discredit is top of mind. It rather perfectly illustrates their differences.
