About wishing you were a musician.

While I can say with confidence that being able to recreate the beautiful production of a musical genius via your own instrument, I'm going to warn you of the consequences:

1) You actually have to carry the instrument.
This one kind of missed me when I signed up for trombone.

2) You have to deal with the ensuing stereotypes.
For instance, trombonists are reputedly oddballs. Pianists are full of themselves, guitarists are supposed to be sexy but most of us just want to play, drummers are notoriously stupid.

3) Choir singers get all the attention, and they won't share.
Especially sopranos.

4) It's hard to make a career of music, unless you a) are so phenomenally talented that you can't be ignored, b) teach music in a high school or college setting, c) sleep with the talent scout.

Those are only a few reasons why a musician's life can be rather difficult. Personally, there's nothing else I'd rather do. :)

sorry, that title was an unfinished thought. i wish i were a musician rather than a (bad) writer. this is because
1) if you put all of your emotions into your music, you are a prodigy. if you put all of your emotions into your writing, you are labeled a freak and sent to a shrink (which sucks).
2) i want to learn to play guitar, base, drums, and keys. if i could do one of these things, i could be in a band with other people and share my art with a group of people and make it a we-thing instead of a me-thing. whenever i try to collaborate with anyone while writing a story, however, i end up in a fight or with something really horrible. so no collabo for me.
3) musicians are just awesome. even trombone players :-)
