well, we made it up the 500ft steep climb called agony grind and then i cut myself and we had to turn around. dumb me bought a new knife (rather than a leatherman) and i had it on my belt. i thought it had a safety for both opening and closing, but i learned the hard way it doesn't. luckily the shot of adrenaline gave me the energy to make it back ( Read more... )

holy crap lady. That freaks me out just thinking about it. I'm glad it happened early on, while it was easy(ish) to turn back. Do you have some small first aid kit to bring along?

grats on the stitches. :D Are they the kind that melt away on their own? (I guess they're all like that now, I don't know. I had them when I was like 5 and they were the sort you had to have pulled out later.. but then with my surgery they just went away on their own.

I think the hiking sticks are a good idea, actually. They're helpful on muddy spots where it can be slippery. I don't own any but I'd like to. I have never seen so much mud as I have since I've been in England. :/

i always thought the mud was a "prop" in medieval period pieces about England/Ireland/Scotland. haha.

we do have walking sticks, but only just nice solid sticks we picked up while hiking last year. they've served us well and we had them that day. maybe once we move and have a little more pocket cash we'll buy the fancy titanium ones.

oh and we always carry a first aid kit for the hikes. exactly for reasons like this. haha. :)

oh hey are you coming to the states soon? let me know the dates!

man the mud here sticks around for up to a week after any actual rain has left. I think the dirt has some special absorbing properties, like Brawny dirt or something.

The wooden sticks are also good! Matthias even has one of these sticks that he's collected little metal uh souvenirs on. In Germany you can get tiny metal plates with the name (and sometimes a little picture) of the place/mountain you've just hiked, and they are curved just a bit, specifically for adding to your wood hiking stick.

We haven't booked tickets yet, but it's likely we'll be there from mid-to-late October (maybe into the first day or two of Nov.) I'll let you know when we actually book!

oh dammit I also meant to give you this link:

I think it's the most hilarious thing I've seen in ages. I showed it to a friend on MSN and he was like "I don't understand why you like it. That kid is lucky to be alive." I guess I've just lived in the UK long enough that the dickheads leaping/pushing each other into traffic have pushed me over the edge. I mean, it's not like he died or anything. heh.

(ffs he LEAPED over the fence in order to get into traffic. WTF.)
