I've mentioned a couple of times that I don't like jails: I don't think that they rehabilitate people, but rather the opposite. Rather than reduce crime, jails increase it. If you haven't already read Foucault's Discipline and Punish, I think he does a pretty amazing job at analyzing the way that western prisons (and for that matter schools and "authority" structures as well) work in our society.
