I think "self"-sufficiency is an inherently problematic goal in that it's very nature necessitates waste and inefficiency. If everyone or even most people became self-sufficient that accumulated waste would be an ecological nightmare.

Additional self-sufficiency tends to lead to isolation and less interaction with other communities.

In a modern context, what level of self-sufficiency/social disconnect might be possible with different sized groups?

Group housing vs. "tribal" household

Present an expectation of levels of work, standard of living, and economic fluidity in a "tribal" household.
