Something clicked in my brain, and I was able to crank out the last of this verse over the past few days! It wasn't writer's block. I'm not sure what it was. But I have been doing a crap-ton of writing, but I've finally been able to complete what I have been working on! Rereading my own work has helped that.

Everything had happened so fast, Dean wasn’t sure of the details anymore. Michael and Lucifer were squaring off, Castiel exploded with the snap of fingers, a hole in the ground appeared then it was over.

Sam was standing behind Dean, silent. The cemetery was blurry through Dean’s tears as he cradled a small white bone in his hands.

The bone was all that was left of Castiel. Castiel, his angel, his lover, his soul mate. Gone with a simple hand movement. No room for goodbyes, or even one last declaration of love. Castiel was standing there, yelling at his brothers, then strewn in a million pieces over the cemetery.

Dean hurt so much, he felt numb. He wishes he said yes to Michael. Being stuck in a cage with Lucifer would be twenty times better than left here on Earth without Castiel.

Sam was talking, but Dean couldn’t register what was being said. He closed his eyes, forcing his tears out as he brought the bone up. He placed a chaste kiss on it, and his mind swam with memories.

He had kissed this bone countless times before, when it was wrapped in flesh, when this was a part of an angel. Another tear slipped down his face as he remembered the soft, salty taste of his lover’s flesh over this bone. The way that it stood out against his pale chest. He loved running his lips over it as they woke in the morning, still half asleep. He would bite it as they made love, leaving red marks as he entered Castiel’s body. He would run his tongue along it as Castiel rocked into him. It was just one small piece that made up the beauty of his angel.

Kissing the bone again, Dean wanted to take it with him when he left the cemetery. Even through the grief that wracked his mind and heart, he knew that was wrong.

Sam was talking again, and his mind picked out a few words. “Salt”, “burn” and “bury” were the ones that stuck out the most. Dean clutched the collar bone of his dead soul mate and shook his head. He couldn’t bear the thought of salting and burning what little remained of Castiel.

Out of the corner of his eye, Dean saw Sam handing him a square of blue silk. Dean bit back a sob as he realized the fabric was the same color of his lover’s eyes. Dean took it with a shaking hand and left it draped over his knee. The all too familiar sound of a shovel in dirt came from behind him.

Dean drew a shuddering breath and kissed the collar bone one last time. He placed it gently on the silk. He dug into the pocket of his leather jacket and pulled out the necklace Sam had given him nearly twenty years ago. He wrapped the leather cord around the bone and rested the ugly face of the golden pendant on top of the bone.

“Hope you find him,” Dean whispered as he caressed both the pendant and the bone for the last time. He folded the silk over, wrapping his lover carefully in the pathetic excuse of a death shroud.

He stood and walked to where Sam was waiting. Sam’s eyes were swimming with hurt as well, but also understanding. Sam knew the gut wrenching feeling of watching your lover die before your eyes. Dean knelt beside the small hole and placed the bone in it. He took a small handful of dirt and dropped it on top.

Dean sat back on his heels, staring up at the sky. Sam began to say prayers as he shoveled dirt into the tiny grave.

He knew that he and Sam would part ways after this. There’s no way either of them could turn back to their lives after everything that happened.

For the first time ever, Dean was truly alone.

Castiel knelt before the feet of God. He finally found him, and it only cost him his life. Castiel placed a reverent kiss to God’s feet before resting his head on God’s lap like a child.

But he was a child. A frightened, sad little child.

God’s hand came down and stroked gently over Castiel’s head.

I am so proud of you, my son. God’s voice echoed.

“I tried to hate you,” Castiel said. “I wanted to hate you. But I couldn’t. Even after Jacob told me that you didn’t care what we did.”

You needed to find your own answers.

“I know that now,” Castiel whispered. “I rebelled, I killed my brethren, I laid with a human. I did everything you instructed us not to do.” God’s hand tilted Castiel’s chin up so that he could stare into his face.

And you helped save the world.

It’s true. Human life will continue because of his actions. Castiel’s heart ached when he thought of Dean, alone and distraught.

Choose your reward. Anything you wish shall happen.

Without hesitation, Castiel looked up into the true face of God.

“I wish to be human, to be back on Earth. And spend the rest of my life with Dean Winchester. And when we pass from that life, I wish to spend eternity in Heaven with him.”

I knew that was what you wanted. So it shall pass.

Castiel came to back in the cemetery he died in. He was laying above a mound of dirt, Dean’s necklace draped around his neck. Castiel drew a deep breath and smiled.

He was home. Now he just needed to find the man he loved.
