Most of you know I am now a (grown-up?) nurse. I work in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit which means very early premies (23 weeks & over), congenital disorders/diseases, & babies born with disorders/disease passed maternally (substance abuse, diabetes, viruses, etc). Some kiddies need 1:1 care; at most, there can be 3 babies to 1 nurse. The ( Read more... )

Jack and I lived in a private room in the Special care unit at the hospital where he was born. They were short staffed one morning and since Jer was there i scrubbed in.

What a huge responsibility to care for delicate babies! I fed two of the healthiest ones and changed their diapers, it was amazing. But mostly I just made sure jack and I didn't make more work for them! We had a regular peds floater who came in to take care of us! But staying in there at night was really an experience! Two emergency admits and one baby nearly died, it was so strange to be the fly on the wall!

While my own children were thankfully all full-term, healthy babies, my godchildren were not and THANK G-D for wonderful people like you while they lived at the hospital for weeks and weeks. :)

I don't know what to say, except I want to print your entry out and draw little hearts all over it. I think I want to be you when I grow up.

Also, I just read an article on Time.com about a baby born at 21 weeks and I immediately thought of this entry. :)

Jesus wept, I would NOT want to take care of a 21-week old. I think I'd be too emotionally & physically drained.
