Still have no idea what's in those capsules, though I always assumed "clues". Maybe his lunch.

I'll never be able to re-read those issues without thinking about him all burned up & not knowing he has a grandchild & Steph and... and...

And this is why legacy characters are so interesting.

Didn't he turn out to be alive? There was some post-War Game (maybe post-OYL) arc where a news reporter revealed Steph's ID as Spoiler all over the place and blamed her death on Batman, then it turned out it was not-dead Cluemaster in disguise wanting revenge for his daughter.

'Course, that leads to all sorts of questions these days, like "why does no one remember that Steph was Spoiler when it was all over the news?" and "why does no one talk about the whole not being dead thing?"
