I set out with a specific mission for
EDCC: I needed Lois Lane art. There were some comics/TPBs that I wanted signed but the main mission was to create a Lois Lane collection to rival
John Higashi's. Of course, I meant only to collect art from artists that I'd PLANNED to meet & maybe even emailed ahead of time. Collecting, as you all know, rarely goes that way.
Under the cut is the pretty, pretty commissions I acquired. I've deliberately decreased the resolution & watermarked the hell out of the images to keep people-- not you, dear flist, 'cause I know you're awesome & very supportive of aritsts-- from doing Photoshop to them & selling them on eBay which is SO NOT ON. Those that aren't watermarked are prints found on the artists' websites.
Also, please note that I'm not very good at speaking in public to begin with & am generally shy so when you combine those traits with star-struckness, I become an idiot. This will be evident in the stories below.
I ordered this piece by
Colleen Coover 3 days before EDCC after
lady_sarai or
zoe_chan or someone gave me a heads up that she had a pre-order list. I emailed, knowing it was really kind of last minute but she was super nice about it & took the order! hen I picked it up, she told us she got excited about drawing Lois Lane because she liked the character so much but sometimes Lois had a bad writer. I kind of nodded with a Big Fat Grin because ZOMG COLLEEN COOVER! Then, I promptly put my foot in my mouth by saying, "I love your work 'cause it's so simple but expressive!" She gave a little grin & said, "Well, the thing about simple is that it's not simple at all. You can see all the flaws." So, all I could say was, "That's what I meant" because it was; I just didn't say it properly. *facepalm*
When I entered the main convention area, I headed straight for the bathroom. Yeah. I know.
Jason Palmer's booth was right up in the very first row with good reason. in it was a 2 metre banner of half this image:
It was just Chris Reeves & Tom Welling and I HAD TO HAVE IT. When I saw the full image in the prints, I almost died of joy. EVERY Superman actor ever is in that painting. It's FANTASTIC. After I bought it, I asked if he did convention sketches. He said not this time because he didn't have any material but at the last minute he said, "Okay, wait, let me just quickly so something" and made this:
Thus began the first of the unplanned art buys.
Dean Trippe founded the awesome
Project Rooftop which holds redesign contests every few months. He's ridiculously creative & a bit of a Lois Lane fan, too. Heck, he's an all around fan of comics & his joyful enthusiasm is contagious. He also didn't mind babysitting keeping
fateschewtoy company while I got some stuff signed. I craved this:
Adriana Ferguson's table was right beside Dean Trippe's. As you can see in her gallery, her style is am-HAY-zing so I instantly pounced. Unplanned art buy #2. BTW, Lois is saying "Watch it, Smallville."
A short distance away was
Adam Goudek &
Billy Fowler. Adam drew that one above. I love the retro feel of it & how much personality it has. Billy was so swamped he couldn't fit it in. He promised to mail it up though which is AWESOME. Really, artists are AWESOME. These were unplanned art buys #3 & #4. It was around this time that I contemplated eating only once a day in order to fund my addiction.
Rae & I passed by
Ibrahim Moustafa while he was drawing Gambit so I instantly zeroed in. He's also trying to break into the business & honest, he will be A Name one day because his layouts & attention to detail is ridiculous. One of his sample panels had a view of the Earth from space from Superman's POV & the ridonculous gorgeousness of the foreshortened perspective is just... GUH.
JUST. LOOK. AND. THIS.Plus him & his friends, C & J, were hilarious. He let us watch him finish up the drawing while they took the piss out of each other. We must've hung out for an hour trading "zomg I was SUCH a fanboy/fangirl!" stories including one where J was completely traumatised by a toddler!Spiderman the day before. Really Good People, these guys.
Maybe 15 minutes before closing on Day 1, the crowds thinned & I finally saw
Marcio Takara's table. Jaw. Dropped.
GUH! ACK! He was also totally swamped but he snuck our requests in anyway. Man, these people are effing MACHINES. IDEK. I'm so very happy with it & am so glad
lithiumlaughter managed to get the very last Rogue print. With the stand.
Day 2 was mostly picking up finished sketches. We passed by
Justin C. Orr's table. Apparently, he's looking to add to his female designs portfolio so his sister took down my Lois Lane request & said she'd let him know about it so he could send it to me. YAY.
Finally, when I was only my last handful of bills, we passed by a while table of
Blank-ees! HAD to request a Lois Lane one. It looks like this:
It is my squishy.
Oh, and there's this whole adventure with David Mack but I'll let
fateschewtoy talk about it. And we did eat only once a day. But SO MUCH ART!!!
