I am SERIOUSLY jonesing for a Mulan marathon. And by that I mean, watching Disney's Mulan over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Having a Disney Princess come within the same continent as my ethnic background was awesome, true but more than that, the music was brilliant and Mulan generally kicked ass all around. Mulan, a woman of china anonymous April 14 2008, 04:29:01 UTC
You know, As much as I appreciate Mulan, they...'disneyed' it. Meaning they gave it a happy ending appropriate for kids. Mulan was a woman who snuck into the army, true, but she wasn't anything special. But since she survived, then was discovered, the emperor was greatly impressed. So he wanted to have her on his court. All she wanted to do was go home, but the emperor was insistence. So she suicided in the palace to inflict a deadly curse upon the household. ^-^; It's MY history, and you've got to have respect for a will like that... Though I guess I don't mind the disney ending. I like to consider it a what if.

Ahhhh, I did not know that. Most fairy tales are watered down for general public consumption, something I'm sad about since it tends to negate the original "lesson" of the story. But on the other hand, sometimes the lesson works despite the adjustments and/or the new lesson is just as valid as the old. Or, if nothing else, it's so PRETTY and entertaining that it makes people interested in the background. Even with the hackjob that Disney did to the Pocahontas story, it still made me interested enough to look into First Nations in a way that my social studies class never did.

Thanks for sharing! Is there any place online where I can find the full poem/story? Most of the ones I found, IIRC, talk about her bravery but not really what happens after.
