According to Smallville-verse, where the heck are Smallville and MetropolisWell, we know that Smallville is very rural and everybody knows everybody. I'm just astounded at 45,001 people being fairly small and single high school - I grew up in a town with 23,000 people, four high schools and nine primary schools. Most towns within a 90-minute drive of a big city are now becoming commuter towns.

I know. I've been brewing over this and I think that was actually a typo. Maybe they mean 4500 people. My high school had around 800 students which is, I think, a comparable size to a rural high school.

Not to drive you nuts, but I always thought in the comics that Metropolis was supposed to be New York City. That's a strong impression.

Then along comes the TV show Smallville. In one episode, they talked about Lana or somebody being able to see Metropolis in the distance from some structure in Smallville; in another episode they talked about Metropolis being within driving distance (was it three hours?) of Smallville.

So, to accomodate Smallville canon, you're right, guess Metropolis has to become Kansas City.

But I feel pretty darn sure that prior to the TV show, Metropolis was supposed to be New York City. There is a building in the city with a globe in front of it (Daily News building?), was supposed to be the inspiration for the Daily Planet.

Yeah, in the comics Metropolis is "Manhattan b14th in the daytime" while Gotham is "Manhattan below 14th at night." In some references and games, they have Metropolis in Delaware around where Dover is while Gotham is across the bay on the south coast of New Jersey.

Then, as you say, Smallville comes along and my world view has to change by several degrees longitude.
