It would be worthwhile to place the story in context of the period. After all, the story is set in rural Wyoming in 1963. Nobody was "out" in that part of the country in 1963. Give Annie Proulx and Ang Lee a break, dude. Its a historical view of homosexual experience and cannot, should not be measured against the life experience of a homosexual man of the 2000's.

This film has divided homosexual men into 2 camps: Hated It and Loved It folks. The men who loved the film/story did so because it reprented themselves in some way. They saw their own lives in that story and were deeply shaken by it. Why deny that group of men their opportunity to find catharsis in Annie's story? For many, thats exactly what it brought them: catharsis. People who had locked away secret hurts and losses were finally able to let them go.
