Option 2: Studying CELTA in another foreign country - Europe
A) Germany
1. Munich Full-time: 8/1-8/26 => Cost: 1595Eu (199,996yen)
2. Berlin Full-time: 7/18-8/12 => Cost: 1595Eu (199,996yen)
Positives: Berlin's course is early and provides housing. Germany is pretty.
Negatives: Munich has received negative feedback from my German friend and have to find housing on my own. Yen is weak to the Euro. Don't speak German.
Housing:
1. 120,373yen
2. 420Eu (52,664) for 4 weeks provided by the school.
Food
4000yen/day for 28days. Total => 112,000yen
Transportation
Flight: 75,000-85,000
Transportation: 8000yen
Total: 93,000
Total Cost
1. Munich: Full-time: 200,000yen + 121,000 + 112,000 + 93,000 = 526,000
2. Berlin: Full-time: 200,000yen + 53,000 + 112,000 + 93,000 = 458,000
Thoughts:
Berlin is the better option of the two, easier airport access and cheaper. It is nice the school provides housing or helps to find housing. There are lots of good foods to try and sightseeing a bit is possible.
B) Greece
1. Athens, Kolonaki Full-time: 8/8-9/2 => Cost: 1575 (197,487)
2. Athens Full-time: August? => Cost: 1575 (197,487)
Positives: I want to visit Greece. Relatively cheap. Greek food?
Negatives:2 doesn't give any specific dates information. Would have to keep checking the website close to the hoped for dates. I don't speak Greek.
Housing:
50,000yen
Food
4000yen/day for 28days. Total => 112,000yen
Transportation
Flight: 75,000-85,000
Transportation: 3,761
Total: 88,000
Total Cost
Full-time: 198,000yen + 50,000 + 112,000 + 88,000 = 448,000
Thoughts:
It might be nice to go to Greece. The course is pretty cheap and food expenses will probably be cheaper than what is listed above.
C) Dublin, Ireland
Full-time: 7/18-8/12 => Cost: 1,600Eu (200,623yen)
Positives: Ireland! People speak English there. The course is early summer. They help you to get housing.
Negatives: I don't know much about Ireland.
Housing:
Homestay: 700Eu (87,773) / Hostel: 80-90Eu/week = 360Eu (45,141) / Residence: 600Eu (75,234)
Food
4000yen/day for 28days. Total => 112,000yen
Homestay comes with breakfast and evening meal. 2000/day for 28days => 56,000
Transportation
Flight: 80,000
Transportation: 15,046
Total: 96,000
Total Cost
Homestay: 201,000yen + 88,000 + 56,000 + 96,000 = 441,000
Hostel: 201,000yen + 46,000 + 112,000 + 96,000 = 455,000
Residence: 201,000yen + 76,000 + 112,000 + 96,000 = 485,000
Thoughts:
I don't really have any thoughts for or against Dublin. Ireland seems like a beautiful place to go. The thing working for this one is that the course is early summer.
D) Italy
1. Catania Full-time: 8/1-9/2 => Cost: 1750 (219,430yen)
2. Palermo Full-time: ???? => Cost: 1250 (156,737yen)
Positives: Italian food! :D Palermo has the cheapest costfor the class
Negatives: Palermo doesn't list full yearly schedule. I don't know Italian. Italian men?
Housing:
1. Can help with finding housing, but does not state the prices. 80,000???
2. Homestay- Breakfast: 492(61,692) /600(75,233) Breakfast&3Dinner: 680(85,264) / Apartment- Studio: 800(100,311) Shared 600(75,233)
Food
4000yen/day for 28days. Total => 112,000yen / Homestay breakfast: 84,000yen / Homestay Dinner: 66,000yen
Transportation
Flight: 85,000
Transportation: 5,000
Total: 90,000
Total Cost
1. Full-time: 220,000yen + 80,000 + 112,000 + 90,000 = 502,000
2. Homestay Twin Full-time: 157,000yen + 62,000 + 84,000 + 90,000 = 393,000
2. Homestay 3Dinner Full-time: 157,000yen + 86,000 + 66,000 + 90,000 = 399,000
2. Shared Apartment: 157,000yen + 76,000 + 112,000 + 90,000 = 435,000
Thoughts:
Mmmm. Italian food. My biggest worry/wonder is why is the Palermo option so cheap? Especially since everywhere else is a few hundred (at least) Euros more, it makes me a bit leery of it.
Final Thoughts: Study Abroad in Europe
From my (over)estimations, here are some breakdowns.
From the cheapest to most expensive:
1. Palermo: Homestay (393,000)
2. Dublin: Homestay (441,000)
3. **Greece: (448,000)
4. Berlin: Schoolstay (458,000)
5. **Catania: (502,000)
**Greece and Catania: Since I'm unsure of housing for these two options the cost may go up or down.
For the most part everything is about equal cost-wise. The Palermo place appears the cheapest, but I still wonder why the course is so cheap. It is basically a matter of preference of the place to study. All of these are cheaper than going to Australia to study. Thailand and Vietnam are still the cheapest options, but the European options are about the cost of the course in Korea.
