Author's Note: So here it is, my first Prince Caspian character study. I'm working on another one right now, and although Susan and Caspian aren't "together" in this one, they kinda still are. Don't worry you'll understand soon. :) I hope you guys like it. :) Oh and the title and summary are "borrowed" lyrics from Maroon 5's song Secret. :)

Sitting in the how and eating dinner, I can't help but notice how quiet Caspian had gotten, how lost his eyes are. He thinks that he's fooling us, and he might have fooled Peter, but Ed, Lucy, and I can see it. It's there, right beneath his calm shell. I've been watching him since we've met, and the more I see the more my heart breaks. You can tell by the way he responds to everything, he's so jumpy, at the slightest noise he reaches for his sword, if you try to give him a hug or a pat on the hand then he flinches as if you're going to hit him. Even now while he sits with Lucy, as she gives him a hug good night, you can tell he relishes the contact at the same time as being wary of it. Everytime Peter yells at him or blames him he gets this look in his eye, like a kicked puppy, like he thinks that he deserves it. I don't think that many people have ever shown him love. It breaks my heart. How cruel could someone be to not love him, he must have been an adorable little boy, with his thick wavy hair and big brown eyes.

But they've taken care of that, they've beat that dreamer so far into submission, that I'm surprised that he remembered the stories his Nurse told him, the lore Professor Cornelius shared. I've seen the thin spidery scars on the backs of his hands and the deep jagged scars on his back, I know enough to see that they have long since healed, and that he favors his right side when riding. I can see clearly the wounded little boy in his eyes, especially when he grooms Destrier. I have a sickening feeling that its the only being that he has ever openly showed any affection toward, not because he didn't know how to love, but because he was afraid to show it to anyone else. It makes me so sad to see it and not be able to do anything about it.

Looking around I realize that I am all alone in the makeshift dining hall, again, and that I've begun to cry. Wiping the tears from my eyes, I hear footsteps approaching, and a heavy Telmarine accent.

"Queen Susan, are you all right? Should I go fetch Queen Lucy?"

Rising up, I nervously wiped invisible dirt from the skirt of my dress I replied, "No Caspian, I'm fine, I'm just tired, I should probably make my way to bed. Good night."

"Good night, Queen Susan."

On my way past him I pulled him into a strong embrace and began to cry in earnest at the way he flinched before returning the favor. Quickly letting go, I placed my hand on his cheek, whispered "I'm sorry," and ran to my room.
