The Mailbox Bomb

Dec 28, 2008 08:07

So last evening we were peacefully reading in the den, which is in the back of the house...and huge huge explosion from the street so we went out to check and evidently someone had put a (we thought) cherry bomb in our mailbox and it exploded all over the front and street. All the mail delivery in the neighborhood is to mailboxes on a post in the ( Read more... )

Wow! I remember all the cherry bombs when I was kid - seemed like we went through 2 or 3 mailboxes, as I recall. Well, I guess it's a BIG DEAL now! No one cared at all back then. My, how times change.

One of those plastic-bottle-type bombs was planted over at Howarth Park, and a woman picked it up to throw it away, thinking it was just trash, and she got some serious injuries to her hand and face. Scary.

Funny thing is (if this is funny at all)..the first policeman who came was just a sweetheart....and when we told him that years ago we used to have cherry bombs, he kinda shuffled and said, "you know, one of those could have been me, because this was the area where we used to cherry bomb mailboxes when I was a teenager..."..then he and your dad got into which version was better, the dry ice or cherry bombs and then your dad told him he used to take the gunpowder out of the caps from cap pistols and put them together in pill capsules and then hit with hammer...and once the hammer head blew clear off.....(things one doesn't need to know..)

Now it is end of day Sunday and we have new mailbox installed. Luckily the post was unscathed.

I told Bob I wanted to install a boxing glove on a big spring in the box so if anyone opened it, they would get punched in the face!!

I'm sorry to read that you have lost another mailbox and had your evening disrupted. I'm glad that you took the attitude that it was kind of exciting. I have lost two mailboxes to hoons knocking them over with their cars. The second time there was white paint on the mailbox and I thought that they had damaged the paintwork on their car and would ave to repaint! What sweet justice! I know it was hoons the second time at least, because I could hear the car engine revving and see the lights going up and down and at different angles at the top of the dirveway, but was too scared to go up there (single mum at the time). Plus, the police at night are too far away, and would only have come after they got away :( Thankfully it has not happened in years, but the 95 year old lady I interviewed had hers destroyed recently, and it was a solidly-built brick one. A local group re-did it for her after she wrote a letter to the editor of our local newspaper. Heh, the conversation between your husband and the officer - lol!

This is just such an amazing story. I told my friends about it when they were over last night. Although I didn't do the best job of remembering it all. hehehe...
