“Alright guys,” Kate slid on her jacket, gazing down at Ryan and Esposito “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“You have a hot date with Writer Boy or something?” Esposito asked sourily, pen still inking out his bit of the paperwork.
“Well it’s not with case files.” Picking up a file folder, she dropped it unceremoniously at their group of desks.
Ryan scowled up at her.
“Hey, you guys lost the bet.” She shrugged, giving them a smug smile of victory.
“Tell Castle hi, as he’s been shirking his shadowing duties.” Esposito grunted.
“Go easy on the guy.” Ryan defended, but still gave his boss the stink eye at the same time. “His mom remarried, his daughter went away to college...”
“Does he just mope around now?” Esposito asked Beckett as she hoisted her bag to her shoulder and pocketed her keys.
She rolled her eyes. “He’s just more work.” Her phone rang and she flipped it open. “Beckett.”
“Castle.” Rick’s voice chimed back.
“Hey you,” waving complacently to the boys to rub in the fact that they had her paperwork to split amongst themselves, she headed to the elevator “what’s up?”
“I found him.” Rick’s voice announced excitedly.
Stepping into the elevator, Kate’s eyebrows went up as she wore surprise. “Really?”
“Yes.”
“He, as in boy?”
“As in boy.”
She hit the lobby button with the free hand. “Are you sure?”
“Yes, he’s perfect. You should see him right now, you can see him right now. Come over here and meet him he’s so sweet and cute and he’s such a good boy.” Rick’s voice went off into baby talk. “I already sent Alexis a picture message she says she can’t wait to meet her new brother when she comes home.”
Hearing his joy, something that had been rather rare since Martha and Alexis had moved out, Kate broke out into a smile. “So you really think he’s the one? We’re done looking?”
“We’re done looking. Come down here!”
Stifling back a chuckle as the doors opened, she dipped her head and stepped out. “Alright, which one are you at?”

Kate’s face went blank.
Rick beamed up at her from his position on the cement. “So, whatdaya think?”
“Rick, I really hate to break it to you but that’s not a dog, that’s a shaggy horse.” She told him, looking down at the large furry beast that sat on the pavement.
His enthusiasm didn’t wane. “I know! He’s huge!” Ruffing the large, erect ears he beamed up at the ever skeptical Kate.
Gripping the strap of her purse, she gazed at the dog, tongue lolling out in a happy canine smile. Tail swishing on the kennel floor as he leaned against Rick who looked like if he lost his balance he would topple over. “Did you just come and pick out the biggest one?” Reaching out, she grabbed the clipboard on the kennel fence, skimming the paperwork.
“Of course not.” Both his hands scratched the sides of the dog’s face. “His chart says it all, good dog, owner couldn’t take care of him because he grew so large.”
“He’s ninety-four pounds.” She gawked.
“Walks on a leash, knows a few commands, house broken, neutered, great with kids, gets along well with other dogs and he’s such a sweetheart.” Rick cooed to the dog, who thumped his tail happily and tried to lick his face. “He’s perfect!”
She made a face as she read the story of ‘Lucky’ as his name was on the paperwork.
Watching her mouth out the words ‘shepherd’, ‘mix’ and ‘two’ Rick finally began to worry. “Why don’t you like him?”
“Because he looks like he could wear a saddle?” She quipped, seeing her significant other’s sad eyes. He was a like a child with a discovered pet. Ever since Alexis had gone off to college, he had been a handful. The idea of a dog, a companion, something to occupy him that wasn’t herself (he was downright insufferable sometimes with no one else at home to pester) had been welcome to Kate. “And all of that hair.”
“He’s sooo soft.” Rick scratched the massive dog’s neck. “You should pet him to see how soft he his. Like Alexis’ old teddy bear that she lost when she was ten.”
The dog moaned happily to the neck scratch. Throwing his head back, his hind leg started twitching.
“I don’t know, looks like you two may need a moment alone.” Glancing back down at the chart, she went over the information one more time before letting her sight wander back down to the writer, and the monster dog he was bent on adopting licking his hands.
Rick looked up pleadingly.
Licking his chops, the dog got up and padded over to her, sniffing her shoes before gazing up at her with big brown eyes, doggy smile and wagging tail.
Kate sighed, kneeling down and letting the canine sniff a hand before scratching the fuzzy, perky ears that laid down submissively.
“See how soft he is?” Rick grinned, getting up and walking over.
“He is soft.” She agreed, reluctantly.
“See how cute he is?”
“He makes an adorable horse.”
“See how sweet he is?”
“He is sweet.” She tried not to smile as the dog pushed his face against her hands, wagging his tail happily yet not being overly anxious like most of the other dogs at the shelter.
“So?”
Avoiding the writer’s own puppy dog face, she studied the face of the large, friendly dog. “Lucky is such a cliched name.”
Rick looked ready to bounce off the walls at her approval. “I have an awesome name already in mind.”
“Literary?” Standing up, clipboard in hand she enjoyed his excitement.
“Watson.” Rocking on his heels, he raised his brows. “Huh? What do you think?”
“What happened to that whole Sherlock phase you were in?”
“He’s a sidekick,” a hand gestured to the large dog “Watson is the perfect sidekick homage, still Doyle, plus he looks like a Watson.”
Kate handed him the paperwork. “Actually I think that whole thing about pets looking like their owners is pretty true.”
“Oh, good one. I walked into that.”
“You did.” She smiled. “Come on, let’s tell them he’s the one.”
“We have a furry child now.” Rick mused as they exited the kennel, looking back at Watson, who seemed depressed they were leaving. “We’ll be right back, Buddy.” He reassured the new pet.
“He is not my child, Rick.”
“You’re just in denial. It’s totally understandable.”
“I’m not in denial.”
“Yes you are.”
“No I’m not.”
“Are too.”
“Are not.”
“Just give it time.”
