Wow. Some lively discussion here (in comments) on the legalities, definitions, worth, and morality of fanfiction.

I'm so glad I've made a little rule to myself about not jumping into such discussions off LJ. My 'it's not for you!' cries would make me look like a lunatic, I'm sure ( Read more... )

When Fox was doing fan interviews at the OMWF CD release/signing for the Buffy S7 boxed set, there is one thing that really stands out in my mind. The interviewer asked something about now that the show was over, what we all were going to do? And I told him "fanfiction will live forever." It's nice to know that, essentially, it will. And since S7 is the only boxed set that I do not own (I know I'll never watch it again, once was hard enough) I have no idea what was included on the extras.

Fic is what happens when someone feels included and accepted for the first time in her life. It's friendship and sometimes it's family.

Yes. It's not that I think the academic discussion shouldn't happen, because it should and it's often fascinating and sometimes I even understand it, but looking at it from a purely academic standpoint seems kind of like talking about the chemistry of love.
