When I was in high school, about once a year, they'd would burn down some of the forest in Sumatera to clear land for plantations, and the monsoon winds would bring the resulting smoke across the Straights of Malacca. (It was kinda ugh, but happily real life was never quiiite as bad as that. It has gotten this bad recently, though.)

ugh that sounds extremely unpleasant.

(I have a work-friend who's working on increasing lifespan of oil palm plantations in Indonesia to in theory make it so people burn down less rainforest so here's hoping)
