I would be quite willing to teach you some fencing moves, of course, Xander, but I don't think that either of us should use a bastard sword. During my training some of the students used to say that it gets its name by being a bastard to use; it is, but that doesn't seem likely a likely source for the name.

Those swords are European, most are from the 1500s. Is Anya's an original? One never knows with her. It should have a long, straight blade and a plain grip that is only really big enough for a man to hold it one-handed. A woman or child might be able to use it two-handed and that might well be easier. That means it can't really be described as a one or two-handed weapon - and that makes it a bastard sword.

It really wouldn't be suitable for fencing. Oh, one could thrust with it, the blade is at least as long as a long-sword - but most users would have swung it -like, like, almost like a club. You must have seen the executioners' sword swung high in historical dramas? Like that. I would really rather that we both take foils ( ... )
