So... remember the friend who was excluded from the Police because of his regimental tattoo?

Well I told him to get in touch with he local politician and see what he said. *bangs head on desk* stupid, stupid me. What was I thinking???!

The politician got back yesterday and seemed to be equally disgusted, digusted enough to contact the local papers ( Read more... )

I think you're being too hard on yourself here hon. You didn't MAKE him go see the politician, you only suggested it. He made the decision to go, and it'll be his decision as to whether to proceed or not. He'll be savvy enough to weigh up the consequences of both actions and the decision will be his. And no matter what he decides, it still won't be your fault, as all you've done is put forward an idea, not lead him by the nose through the whole process.

*sigh* True... I suppose I just feel a bit responsible as he worries about what the best thing to do is.

He phoned me today to ask for my advice and the best I could come up with was "do what feels right to you, if you think its wrong and you want to out it.. do it and if not... well at least you've rattled a few cages". I kinda feel like I blew up the raft and pushed him out to sea. Yes I know he got in it... lol but he's not the best sailor and he isnt used to battling political sharks.

Right well.. I feel like I've wrenched everything I can out of that metaphor. *grin*

He's a grown man, he can ask your advice but he's more than capable of not heeding it if he doesn't want to.

Anyway, if he does go to the press - then a police career is over. However, from the sounds of it it's over anyway so what's the difference. I suppose it comes down to what he wants from it, an apology, a change of policy for the next squaddie who applies, just to make the force uncomfortable for a while or whatever. I wouldn't, simply because even if the force isn't vindictive enough to start pulling him over every five minutes, letting journo's into your life is rarely a beneficial thing.
