Or, Stuff I liked this year.
I'ts worth mentioning that as I'm hopelessly behind, the stuff I liked this year isn't particularly current, but it's still good. It's still good!

My favourite fic I read this year has to be Samarkand Nights, by Hyarrowen. It's an old fic (2011) for an old fandom (Shakespeare's Henry V, believe it or not) but anyone who ( Read more... )

Gosh, this was a nice surprise! Thank-you, so much, for the rec - and once again, I'm glad you enjoyed that story.

Also, your icon! That's lovely.

Loved it! Thank you so much for an amazing story. I'm a permanently peripatetic sort of person -met my fella on an overland trip, and the sentence- "And one day, the road crested another high snowy ridge, with prayer-flags snapping in the wind on either side, and instead of yet another ridge up ahead, they saw that at last the land sloped away before them, the thread of the road descending in sharp angles between the vast white ranges, into a land they could only guess at?" It's amazing. I've been there, and let me tell you, you nailed it. Absolutely.
PS: I'm coming to this fandom from the Hollow Crown series, rather than the Branagh movie. Have to watch it at some point! Thanks again!

Goshwow. Thank-you! I envy you so much - I've never been to the big mountains (though I've climbed plenty in Scotland) and would love to see the mountains of Central Asia. But I have a friend who goes solo trekking in the Himalayas, and she gave me lots of ideas - she's responsible for the curds they drink, for instance. And the character of Jehan is partly based on her.

"We are the pilgrims, master: we shall go
Always a little further: it may be
Beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow,
Across that angry or that glimmering sea,

White on a throne or guarded in a cave
There lives a prophet who can understand
Why men are born: but surely we are brave,
Who make the Golden Journey to Samarkand."
