"Terra!"
She recalled reading that, somewhere, there was a saying that the eyes were the window to the soul. She had never considered the truth behind the saying, neither believing nor disbelieving a statement she had never heard or experienced.
However it proved itself to be true when Aqua looked into the eyes of the man who had been her friend and it was not Terra who looked back. It was someone else's soul who gazed back at her from green eyes turned gold, though it felt both foreign yet familiar.
Aqua hadn't expected to be guided by Terra to Radiant Garden of all places, and she had definitely not expected to find Xehanort waiting where she had expected to find her friend. But this darkness was unmistakable. And though Terra had done many things, he would never hurt her. Not like this.
"No, you're Terra...!" Aqua said with conviction, as if her faith would make it come true.
Her words seemed to resonate within Terra and she dropped to the floor when he released her. He stumbled back, holding a hand to his head in pain, struggling, fighting a battle that she could not see.
And then she could feel... Terra. But it was only for a fraction of a second, and then it was Xehanort who smiled at her. His smile was faint at first, a smirk hidden behind his hands, that grew into a wide grin. "Terra lost to the dark parts of his heart. He drowned in his own darkness!"
The arc of the keyblade as it swung towards her made something within her cry out. That wasn't Terra.
Was she too late to save him?
No. She refused to believe that.
"I am Master Aqua," Aqua said as she brought out her keyblade. "You're going to give my friend back."
It hurt her to have to fight Terra, even if it wasn't her friend within that body. But she was trying to save his heart.
Xehanort laughed at her, knocking her back as if she was nothing more than a fly that was far beneath his notice. He was strong, far stronger than she wanted to acknowledge. It was the darkness consuming him that gave him strength, and as one who protected and followed the light, it was her place to fight him.
But it was more than just duty. It was guilt, guilt at failing where she had been determined to succeed. No matter what was required, no matter the consequences, Aqua wouldn't let her friend be used to hurt more people. She would save him.
"Terra," Aqua whispered to herself like a talisman, and tightened her grip on her keyblade. The star-shaped charm hanging from it seemed to glint at her.
"Terra has sunk into the darkness. It's hopeless." Aqua struggled against the strength of his attack, the two keyblades grating against each other, seeming to shriek from the friction. "There's nothing left for you to save."
Aqua knew it wasn't true. She could feel Terra there, just out of her reach. Aqua would get close only to have Terra recede, as if he wasn't strong enough to reach back to her. And with every despairing word out of this man's mouth, Terra seemed to further himself. "Terra!"
Xehanort smiled at her, a faint smile that was a distortion of a beloved expression, striking her deep as if to erase her memories of Terra's slight smile that had reassured her so many times with its quiet strength. He realized that it pained her, and took enjoyment in the fact that such things hurt her far more than his attacks.
He seemed to disappear from her vision and then she was being thrown around by the impact of attacks she couldn't see. "You're such a weak little thing," whispered his deep voice into her ear. "No wonder you couldn't save Terra."
"No!"
There was the sensation of a hand passing through her hair, and she spun with her keyblade. Xehanort stood a short distance away, that hateful smile on Terra's face as he crooked his fingers at her. "You're just as fragile as he was, aren't you? Why don't you--" He froze mid-sentence and there was disbelief in his expression. The hand gripping the keyblade dropped to his side.
Aqua. Her name was said with so much feeling, so much familiarity.
"Terra!"
Her friend was still there. Aqua was glad, filled with relief that there remained a glimmer of hope. She could still--
His hands dropped to surround her like iron bands, pulling her back against him. "Tsk, like it would be that easy."
"Ahh....!" Aqua struggled against his hold. "Terra! I know you're still there!"
Xehanort laughed in her ear, his mouth so close that she could feel his warm breath against her earlobe. "Such an innocent girl to believe such a trick."
She swung her keyblade toward his feet at the same time that she kicked out, and then spun the moment he released her, laughing even more. "Terra!"
The darkness seemed to grow ever thicker around him but she knew her friend was still there. Somewhere, behind those shaded golden eyes, lay her friend's heart.
Aqua redoubled her efforts and caught him off guard, her magic flinging him up into the air from which she slammed him back down. His breath burst out of him with a grunt.
And then she could feel Terra, stronger than ever. She reached toward him and it was like they met in a pillar of light, heart to heart. The darkness reared its demonic head but now that she had finally found Terra, she wasn't going to leave him. They were going to return to where Ven was waiting, and they would wake him, together.
Aqua looked over at Terra and he nodded back at her. They raised their keyblades simultaneously.
"Light!"
Xehanort stumbled back and as he was enveloped in a golden glow, said aloud. "You're still going to fight me?"
He said it with low intensity, as if he couldn't believe it. Anger at the realization that he had not managed to subdue Terra as he had believed, that he was not the one with control. His body seemed to freeze where it stood, and there was disbelief in his expression.
Terra was still fighting.
Aqua bowed her head slightly and smiled to herself. Terra hadn't given up on their dream just yet. She couldn't either. The three of them would achieve it. That determination augmented her and she raised her head, staring as Terra directed the keyblade at his own chest. It sunk in, driving out the demonic darkness that clung to him. Aqua wondered if it was her imagination that there was a half-smile on its face before it melted away, becoming a murky pool upon the ground. As if to say that this was not the end.
That this was only the start.
