Ooooh! Chinchillas! I wanted one of those for years, but they are very high maintenance creatures! (Or at least, the research implied this.)
A combination of having cats and an S.O. irrationally avoidant of rodents ended my chinchilla dreams. When you get one, I'll be looking forward to hearing about your ownership adventures!
From the research I've done, they don't seem to be much more high-maintenance than a cat with a litter box. Clean out the cage once a week, make sure they have fresh food and water daily, and give them a dust bath once a week. (They'll take the dust bath by themselves when it's available.)
Other than that, just play with it, really, and make sure it doesn't get overheated. Most of the maintenance will come from setting up the cage and getting ready to bring one home. I'm looking forward to it with great gusto.
Ha, yeah, that's why when it comes out of the cage, it'll either be in a giant hamster ball or the bathroom. The breeder I've been palavering with also says that if they have a multitude of interesting things to chew on of different textures in their cage, they'll be less likely to spend precious running-about time chewing on things outside the cage.
