I guess I never realized that Swift was criticizing female vanity. After reading it again, I saw this and was amazed! As well, the structure of the poem adds to the satire and the vulgarity of the poem. When the readers have to stop at the end of each line, the words of that line become more important and make us concentrate on them more, making their meanings jump out even more! And the question if the satire is more vulgar to us or his society I commented on in my post...
I guess I didn't really think much about that, even though it was discussed in class, the sexistness of the poem, I was just shocked at the crudeness for that time period! It is true, it is very sexist, but at the same time, men have come to expect high standards of beauty for their possessions............i mean, um.... women, and so we also have the pressure to live up to those standards! What can i say, it looks like a lose-lose situation to me! If we were all true feminists, i think we'd have thrown out our make up and Maybelline and L'oreal and all those other big companies would be out of business, however we also care about how we look and our beauty. I don't believe that beauty and acknowledging and looking after one's personal appearance is necessarily wrong, but then again, my one roommate is a narcissist, and that IS wrong! (I'm not exaggerating either!)
