Pick a character and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them. Any and all characters welcome. (even ones i haven't written but might know about...)

4. I don't think he's MAD. Not madder than most Doctors--eccentric, amoral, unconventional, amused by /weird shit/, sure. But he's not at all incapable of grasping what's going on in the world around him/situation he's in and responding to it, taking advantage. There's a LOT of inconsistency between episodes like Castrovalva, where his plan is fucking incomprehensible but stuff goes along pretty sanely, barring a cry of My WEEEEEEEEB!!!, an episode like Time Flight where there is /nothing like/ a logical explanation for most of the Khalid bs, and episodes like Five Doctors and Planet of Fire, where he's chuckling and not-really-sadistic-at-all-per-se and sanely pursuing sane goals ( ... )

1) Hell yes. I don't know that I've ever read a version of Ainley!Master who I can consistently hear in my head, and I think it has something to do with Ainley's delivery, which I generally love but find wildly unpredictable, and something to do with inconsistent writing (in canon). This being said, I think your version of him is the truest, canonically, of any I've read.

A bit of a Belle et la Bete, with a proposal every night before bed. But I wish I could pin down specifically why the tide turns in his head from "I must explicitly offer this cake whenever there's a pause in the conversation" to "I'll just let you stare at this cake for a while and see if you get ( ... )

how do you write five?

With a computer, largely. x_losfic January 14 2011, 15:31:06 UTC
1. Five isn't more of a Failure than the others on a plot-points level. He's just more sensitive to failure, more prone to guilt, more able/compelled to take the responsibility for catastrophe onto himself. He's not even less capable than Four, just less blithe and unconcerned when things go to hell. Not that Four doesn't /care at all/, Five just cares in an overwhelming, personal way ( ... )
