I went to the game last night and, regarding the hit on Tomas Kaberle, I can't really tell if it was dirty or not. From where I was sitting, it looked like a lot of shoulder on Cam's part, but then again, what constitutes as a dirty hit? The hit didn't so much knock Kaberle out as his head hitting the boards did. Everyone's saying it was so late in ( Read more... )

I will admit to not liking the hit "clean" or not. Legal or not. And I admit to having my opinion coloured by the fact that I'm a Leafs fan.

I think what irritates me the most is the fact that this is the second hit like this in as many weeks. Yes, hockey is dangerous and everything, but that does not mean I have to like it when things like this happened.

I wonder, though, if someone on the Devils (Gomez, Rafalski, or Elias) had been hit like that by one of the Leafs if you would think differently...

*shrug* I don't know if it would have changed my opinion any. I remember being plenty mad at Alexander Ovechkin when he hit Daniel Briere and just about knocked HIM out too.

I don't think I would think differently, just because at this point, I'm not sure if I agree with Cam. I'll back him because he's one of my boys and because I really don't think he knows what he was doing, or what he got himself into, but I don't think he should have hit Kaberle. Kaberle didn't have the puck, and I think the hit was fairly uncalled for ( ... )

Likely Janssen *didn't* know what he was doing. And, no, I don't think the hit was called for either. I have yet to see the hit but the game from last night is recorded ( ... )

The hit.

Aye. In watching it now, it is definently late, but granted, Kaberle did have the puck at one point. Could Cam have avoided it? Yes. That's the point I disagree with. It's just as scary to watch it on TV as it is to watch it in the arena.

It's almost like the league is trying to categorize players. If you're a scorer and hit someone, the league condones it, so you get a penalty. If you're a hitter, don't expect to get a penalty when you hit someone, because that your role. The refs seem so intent on keeping the fans happy that they do what they think will prevent them (the fans) from being pissed, which is why I think that if this play occured in Toronto, there would have been a penalty, no doubt. This leads to inconsistency, and this leads to an unhappy us. *sigh* Then again, no one will ever be completely happy with the refs. I just wish they knew what they were doing at least part of the time.

Not having seen the hit, nor wanting to get into the legality of hits that you got into with caitlin, I'll just address your question.

What constitutes a late hit?I believe that it's a hit that comes more than 3-4 seconds after a player is no longer touching the puck *or* after the whistle has blown at a stoppage of play ( ... )

I edited the post to include a link to the hit.

It looks to me like Cam did have time to stop and turn around, avoiding the hit on Kaberle. Chico, the colour commentator, believes it was borderline, and I would almost agree with him, with the exception of the fact that Cam looked as if he wound up and then hit Kaberle. In that case, the hit should be considered late. I don't know, I've never really thought about the properties of a late hit, and now it's frustrating me. *hmph*

A 3 minute ice-time player takes out a 25-minute top 10 defenseman. Then Cam only gets 3 games!! Non-sense. Why defend a goon who doesn't contribute anything to hockey.

When he hits a player who has the puck, that contributes to the game. He's helping his team gain control of the puck. I'm sure you could agree with that. I don't agree with what he did, not by any stretch of the imagination. I think he made a huge mistake. But would you be reacting this way if he hit someone who wasn't as important to the Leafs as Kaberle is? I'm not trying to pick a fight, I'm just curious.
