I've noticed over the years, that people who more-or-less grew up in the Catholic church have an extremely hard time admitting that the institution is faulty, if/while they remain in it.

Some of the church's biggest critics are former members, though.

Credit (for lack of a better word) to George Carlin for his "unironic" role in the movie Dogma.

Denial ain't a river in Egypt, and you will never solve a problem until you admit there is a problem. The Magisterium (teaching authority) is supposed to be infallible, and so Catholics can't admit the Magesterium got caught with its infallibility down. Look at VC-II: by every metric of success, this was total fail. Despite what is so plainly obvious, they can't admit it, and so won't correct it. They even celebrate VC-II as though it were some great success. However reality refuses to be wished away.

Former, disillusioned members are often the harshest critics. The RCC did it to itself.
