I like the way the show ended, but I really hated the writing. Like you, I hope there's not so much of a story arch in the next season. Simply because I feel that Moffat doesn't write story arcs quite as well as he writes one-off episodes. Silence in the Library and Blink were some of my favourite episodes in the past. I just think he doesn't quite deliver on the goods when there's a bigger storyline involved.
I'm also not at all fond of River Song, and I think it's because she's one of Moffat's creations and she just foreshadows so much doom and gloom. I like that she's on par with the Doctor, and I like that she seems to care so much about him, but she's incredibly sneaky and underhanded, and I'm not quite sure if I trust her fully.
i personally don't like arcs at all. i can't get into shows like BSG or Heroes for that every reason. but i thought it was okay in doctor who, not as bad as it could have been. you do have a point about moffat being better at stand-alone episodes though.
we'll see but i bet next season will be a letdown. for me, it's probably because i enjoyed this season way too much. so glad that amy and rory will both be back though :)
