He could only remember it in fragmented bits and pieces. There was - a fight, or several of them, and a lady in a white dress, and a field full of roses. He could only see them in flashes, like movement in your peripheral vision, but one thing did stand out to him. The swordsman, the blond one with the big eyes and a sad past. He was like a deep lake, and Squall could really only see the surface, but he knew how far it must go.

But now they watched each other like cats, circling, and he wondered how much the other remembered. They were looking for something... a crystal? It was all so foggy, but Cloud's face stood out in perfect HD. He could only wonder what the other remembered. Watch. Wait. Wonder.

The blond swordsman had been a week settled into his new home in Hollow Bastion when Leon finally sighed internally and trailed him to the bailey and took a seat next to him, too close.

"I feel like I know you from somewhere," Cloud muttered, like they were picking up a conversation they'd just left off, not minutes before. Leon knew the feeling. Seeing Cloud was, in a way, like coming home.

"You don't remember much, do you?"

His eyes were big and blue and shining in a face too young for his frame, or his fighting. "A memory?"

And, without thinking, his hand came up - like there was a string attached, and someone else was tugging on it, he certainly wasn't doing it - and one gloved finger pressed against Cloud's lower lip. Thumbed it down, pressed into the plush pinkness of it.

"There was a fight, and a lady in a white dress, and - "

" - a field of flowers." His voice was breathy and far away, and he didn't seem to mind the hand, so Leon let it stay. It drifted, to cup his cheek. "I thought that was a dream."

"Same dream, then." He didn't look into it too much. They'd lost almost everything when the worlds had fractured, and all they could do now was rebuild, rebuild, rebuild.

But, he thought, as they mutually decided that words were pretty superfluous at this point, there was some comfort in deja vu. That knowing, on a level deeper than your bones, that this was someone important. Someone you could trust.

Someone you want to rebuild with.
