The flowers were out at this time of year, and they turned their faces up to drink in the rain.

They walked home together often, from jobs they both hated. Vexen worked for a pharmaceutical company, doing the same boring thing day after day, when he would rather be researching. Saix was a porn star.

The blue-haired man shivered, his hair slicked down to his skull and dripping wet down his back. He wasn't exactly dressed for the weather.

Vexen paused, and to his surprise, Saix did too. They'd never actually talked to one another, just assuming that they'd be there at the exact same time, walking in tandem, every day.

He held out his umbrella, and the shivering man joined him wordlessly.

A minute later, Vexen scowled over at his umbrella partner. "Don't you have a coat?" he muttered.

Saix looked up, amber eyes wide. Then he shook his head sadly.

Vexen stopped, and once again, Saix did too. "You don't have a coat... at all?"

Saix shook his head again, clinging to himself and shivering.

Vexen paused, then quietly took the coat off, cursing himself every second of the way. "Here," he said gruffly. "Take it. I've got others. Where do you live?" They'd arrived at the crossroads, where they usually parted ways.

"It's... a ways up the street, yet," Saix replied, his teeth chattering, and Vexen was surprised to hear that his voice was low and musical. "You don't have to..."

But Vexen kept walking straight, and Saix followed him, huddling close under the umbrella.

They reached Saix's house - a small, broken-down cottage at the edge of town, weeds choking the flowers in the yard.

He flushed, embarrassed all of a sudden. "Thank you..." he murmured, his voice breathy and uncertain. "...what's... your name?"

"My..." Vexen swallowed and looked away. "My name is... Vexen." It was a strange name, he knew, and he didn't like it any more than the next man.

But Saix smiled. "Pretty," he said softly, and Vexen felt something like a heart go out to him. "I'm Saix," he added, looking away again.

They stayed that way for a long time, unmoving in the pouring rain. Finally, Vexen nodded his head and lifted a hand to wave goodbye - but Saix caught it with his own, and before Vexen could form a coherent thought, he reached up and pressed their lips together.

They stayed that way, too, for a long time.

There were supposed to be fireworks that night, for Fourth of July. But it rained.

Saix sat on the window seat and stared out at the night sky, sighing at the utter darkness.

"I'm sorry," Vexen said, taking off his coat and hanging it in the closet. "I know you were looking forward to it."

Saix nodded. "I don't like it when it rains... I can't see the moon."

Vexen sat next to him and smiled. "You really like it, don't you? The moon."

Nod, nod. Saix traced a finger down the pane of glass, cold even for summer because of the weather.

"I want to show you something... come with me."

Vexen had a planetarium on the upper floor of his house. Saix gasped, and gazed in wonder at all the stars and planets... always there.

Vexen smiled to himself. It was getting to the point where he couldn't stand to see Saix sad anymore.

It was too wet for them to have many trick-or-treaters - and Saix was eating all the candy, anyway.

"You'll get sick," Vexen informed him crossly.

Saix shrugged, face blank, and reached for another square of chocolate.

"Stop that."

Saix licked the chocolate, grinned, then leaned forward and traced Vexen's lips with it.

He sputtered and flailed. "Saix!"

The blue-haired man laughed then, a deep throaty laugh and Vexen just couldn't get enough of, and lifted the square of chocolate from his fingers with his tongue.

He kissed Vexen. There were advantages to having a former porn star for a boyfriend.

A knock came on the door, half an hour later, but neither occupant of the house heard, nor cared.

"This isn't right," Saix murmured. "It should be snowing on Christmas."

Vexen heartily agreed. The fact that it hadn't yet been cold enough for snow aggravated him - he loved the cold weather. All they'd had for the past week was rain, rain, rain - and, of course, more rain.

Saix sighed and watched the little droplets fall, such a bleak sound to wake up to on this most joyous of mornings.

"Saix."

He turned around, eyebrows raised.

"Merry Christmas," Vexen said with a smile, holding out a gift.

Well... it was Christmas, wasn't it? Saix took the gift, then flushed. "I don't have anything for you," he said, sounding mortified.

"Open it."

It was a small box. Saix tried to figure out how to unwrap it gracefully... then just gave up and tore the paper off in one rrrrrip.

It was a small, velvety blue box.

He looked up at Vexen, startled.

"Open it," he said again, supremely enjoying the look on his lover's face.

Saix opened the box, and carefully slid the silver band onto his third finger. "Moonstone," he murmured under his breath, smiling.

Vexen wound his arms around Saix's waist and rested his head on his shoulder. "Will you marry me?"

"Of... of course," he managed to get out.

Vexen chuckled. "Good... I was a little worried you'd think it was too soon, or something..."

"No! No." Saix reached back and held Vexen close to him. "It's perfect."

"Merry Christmas."

Saix tensed then. "I still don't have a gift for you...!"

Vexen touched his lips to shut him up. "You gave me an answer. That's the greatest gift I could ever get."

They stayed that way for a long time, listening to the rain fall on the roof.

"You know..." Vexen began, looking out at the front yard. "...We met in the rain."

Saix tilted his head questioningly.

"Well, not really. But it was raining the first time I talked to you..."

Saix smiled. He remembered now.

"...and that was the first time you kissed me." Vexen chuckled. It seemed like such a long time ago, even though it hadn't even been a year. "Do you still hate the rain?"

"...No," Saix said quietly, smiling to himself. It hadn't even been a year... but so much had changed.
