It was a little bit like dying.

His laughter echoed through the halls of the Radiant Garden. Ienzo stepped back, almost running into Aeleus, who placed a steadying hand on the young apprentice's shoulder. But he, too, felt like backing away.

Xehanort... well, he'd always been almost insane. Everyone knew that. He was afraid, now, that he'd finally cracked... and as his hand tightened on Inezo's shoulder, he debated just grabbing everyone and running. It was probably a good idea at this point.

The laugh subsided to a low chuckle. "Oh my Kingdom Hearts," Xehanort whispered under his breath. "You are real... and you want to be found."

His hands gripped the handles of the large set of double doors, black as night, that had appeared in the basement months and months ago.

"And now? You have opened the way for us!"

Even caught Aeleus's eye. This wasn't exactly how they'd planned it.

And then, without further ado, Xehanort stepped back and dragged the doors with him, opening them into the yawning darkness.

He stepped through, and didn't look back.

The five stared out after him, shocked at the suddenness... Braig broke free and ran forward, after him. "Hey, wait up!"

Dilan took two steps forward automatically. "...SHIT!" he shouted, an with an apologetic look to the remaining three, launched himself after Braig and Xehanort.

Even, Aeleus, and Ienzo stared at each other. What to do?

Even rolled his eyes, and crossly pointed out, "Well, we can't go back up there now. I'd rather face death than tell Ansem what his precious Xehanort just did."

Ienzo nodded. "Well... we did plan for this, didn't we?"

"Yes." Aeleus nodded as well. "We might as well go through with it."

They stood there for another long minute.

"...Together?"

"On the count of three."

One.

Two.

Three.

There was a terrible pain, at first. As if every emotion in the world was happening at once, too much of it, all of it... as if his heart was being torn out.

His body writhed, the pain went on and on and on and there never seemed to be an end, until finally his only wish in the world was for it to stop, for the terrible horrible pain in his chest to just end.

And just when he thought he couldn't take it anymore and he would surely die, if he wasn't dead already... it was over.

There was no more pain. There was nothing.

He raised his head, and laughed.

He watched the body convulse on the floor with hateful expression on his face. As if he needed anything, to be complete.

He felt a sinister prescence behind him. Five of them. Heartless, like himself.

They were unnecessary now.

It was almost ridiculously easy to overpower them, and he laughed with the thrill as the power of destruction coursed through him. Of course. Their hearts were his now, he'd made sure of that.

As for the remainder... the feeble husks of their former human beings... Ha. He turned away, shaking his head. They were heartless and useless, and therefore inconsequential. They were nothing. They were nobody.

He would need a new name now. Or... perhaps he would use an old name, and give his spineless surrogate father what he was due.

"You may call me... Ansem."
