The future?

Right ho ladies and germs, I will be out of a job sometime in July and so I have been trying to decide what to do from here. As I doubt I will get another job straight away I have been contemplating making the sewing into a bit more of a business as a stopgap, but what I need to know is whether there would be enough interest to make it worthwhile ( Read more... )

I definitely think the things you make are worth selling professionally, some of your designs are amazing!
If you are out of work anyway, then your initial investment is only in materials and advertising, as your time is free, if that makes sense?
I say go for it, I will be in the market for a new corset next spring, hopefully ;)
You have the advantage that you work in more than one field too; corsetry, costuming, fancy dress, and presumably you could do bridal outfits too.
Go for it!

Aaarg! No! Not bridal, all brides are psycos! Sorry, I may have had one or two bad experiences with brides - rant over! Thanks for the encouragement :-)

Thanks for that, I really would appreciate any advice you can give, I'm not certian I would want to do this long term, but i figured now was as good a time as any to give it a shot!

I would love to commission something not-black from you! Unfortunately, due to cash-flow problems of my own I can't realistically imagine myself having the disposable income to spare until next year, by which time you'll have a job and not be taking commissions. (Gah!)

You could well make a living from your work, your designs are unique and stand out. However, I suspect it might only reach worthwhile levels when we're properly out of recession and people's disposable incomes go up. If you have spare time then use it for sure but my suspicion is that as a business it would only fully flower long-term.

Thanks! Hopfully by next year I will have a job, but give me a shout either way and I am sure I could fit you in for something!

Thanks, I'm a bit wary of trying to make something I enjoy into a business, but I think its at least worth considering.

That's got to be a big consideration.
Are you thinking of just sewing to your own designs, or making things (like you did with the corset for charity) and then seeing who's interested, or would you take commissions where the buyer is very clear about what they want or has a pattern?
