Primate behavior can explain so much about how awful humans are to each other, and yet so few people will ever admit to it. They always have to justify it in some way or another, 'cause saying "you're outside my circle of concern, therefore I don't care about you"--despite being absolutely true--is somewhat frowned upon.
As an example from my own subculture: I see geeks (particularly MALE geeks) ostracizing people whom they should be embracing, for very much the same reasons: perceived privilege. Pretty-girl-geek shaming is a symptom of that, because the male geeks in question seem to think that being a pretty girl conveys a level of privilege that they themselves will never have ... which is mostly complete bullshit. Come on, people! Here is a perfect way for you to start relating, in a real way, to someone you're physically attracted to! Why is this a bad thing?!?
The hipster-esque public decrying of geek-themed-but-popular movies and TV shows (The Avengers, X-Men, Once Upon a Time, even Star Trek and Star Wars) is another symptom

Actually, you are right on. This is perfectly natural human troop behavior, and ALL groups do it.
The thing is, people tend to break into small groups so that some people can have some level of power. Like, for example, you or I are never going to have the power of the President of the United States. Presumably, he is the main Alpha Dog in the country. But we might have some level of status in some smaller group that we belong to.
