I have been reading about this Jewish philosopher named Maimonides. I guess he did a lot of stuff, and he's kind of a hero among modern progressive theologians and especially, humanists. Here is my favorite part:

Maimonides lists his famous Eight Levels of Giving (where the first level is most preferable, and the eighth the least):[44]

Maimonides! I was trying to remember where I'd heard/seen that name, and I just remembered that my doctor has "Maimonides' Prayer for the Physician" up in his exam rooms at his office. It's a good prayer. Combined with what you reproduced above, I think it might behoove me to read up on his work. He sounds like my kind of guy. (And very Buddhist, in his own way.)

The actual book that I am reading is "To Heal the World: The Ethics of Responsibility" by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks (who I have met, btw). The whole book is not about Maimonides, but Rabbi Sacks talks about him. Clearly, in reading the book, he was a huge influence.

I had heard the name before, but I thought he was more of an Ancient Greek guy, contemporary with Philo.
