Why "teachers" and "professors"?

I read an old acquaintance's blog today; on the subject of why we call teachers and professors such. Most of it was a rant at the higher education system and how professors were simply "professing" their opinions on the field, essentially spouting nothing but bullshit to students. He's probably in a bunch of social science classes where the material is based on people's bullshit opinions and he just can't tell the difference because he doesn't want to take the class seriously and won't open a book.

I use the term professors because I think there's a higher level of respect in teaching a college course, especially if you have a doctorate. Although, I think my high school teachers interacted with me on a more personal level and became more interested in my future goals than most of my professors in college, so I refer to them as my "mentors from high school."
