My WTF moment of the week: out of the blue, my father says, "You should learn Arabic. Then you could work for the FBI." First, I have no interest in Arabic. None. Second, when did I ever show interest in working for the FBI? Come to think of it, working for the FBI is on my list of chosen professions, right above teaching and right below ( Read more... )

I've had similar conversations with my dad, except about Chinese and energy law. As though I have once in my entire existence expressed an interest in either one.

Another Interesting Factoid: until the late 1970s, English was the default degree in the U.S. - anyone who wanted a nice solid background in their bachelor's degree went with English, because it made people roundly employable. (Not the case anymore, but you can leave that bit out.) :)

(cringes as I recall these talks with my own parents) This must be some weird parent gene thing. I so hope I don't get it if and when i have kids.

And there is nothing wrong with having an english major. You can go write poetry and become famous! :)

Teaching at WVSU was *exactly* like babysitting for me--No, I actually like babysitting better.

But that's the biggest reason I quit doing it. I expected it to be different from high school kids, but freshman are only a year away from high school seniors and they are still children, whether they can vote and live in a dorm or not.

Good point. And if I did teach, I'd be lowest on the totem pole and would probably be stuck with freshman comp. *shudder*
