Doctor Who Meme Day 04
Onto my Favourite Doctor! Might as well get this one out of the way early; I'll probably want to spend the day either drooling over David Tennant in skin-tight low slung lace-up black leather pants, talk about watching the original Fright Night, or talk about my pirate-themed Doctor Who weekend I decided to have.
And if you didn't guess the answer to this one, for shame...
Okay. Yeah. Obvious answer is obvious. Now, I should be a smart ass and point out that, technically, there is only one Doctor, just several incarnations, and that would save me the trouble of answering this. Because, really, I do like all of the Doctors, in different ways. But I'll just assume the meme wants to know which incarnation is my favorite.
THE TENTH DOCTOR
Okay. Yeah. I'll admit it: I do find him sexy, and that does draw me to him. How often is the hero of a show a sexy geek?
But that's not the only thing I like about him. I ignore 'pretty boys' all the time, so there'd have to be something else that drew me to him. What won me over was The Christmas Invasion. It was that scene where he's just defeated the Sycorax leader, and he's babbling about fruit in stockings, and then it's like someone just flicks a switch and he kills the Sycorax leader without showing any remorse. And then it happens again, when he takes down Harriet Jones, despite the fact that he really liked her. His flashes of darkness are few, but when he shows them (and I don't mean the yelling Emo anger, but that quiet rage when he's truly furious) are very chilling.
I love his geeky enthusiasm over new experiences, his backhanded complements (it always makes me laugh when I read fan fic that insists the Doctor is 'nice', because clearly they've never actually listened to the Doctor), his snarky comments, his ego and his vanity. I love his geek chic suits, the Chucks, the Brainy Specs and the excited hedgehog hair.
And I really love that, despite the fact that Ten seems to be a social butterfly who loves everyone and everything, he's also the most broken of all the Doctors, the one closest to finally going over the edge and becoming something dark and terrifying. Okay, Nine was like that, too, but Nine had a chance to heal, while every time it looked like Ten was getting better, RTD would put him through another evil trauma.
Some people complain that Tennant overacts, but I see it as part of his character; he's trying to hide the fact that there's still something broken and scary inside him, and his enthusiasm is sort of overcompensation.
Yes, Ten had his flaws. But, dammit, he's my Doctor.
Oh, and, erm, I also have a fondness for this guy.
THE EIGHTH DOCTOR
He was my first Doctor, and will always hold a special place in my heart as a result, even though, now I'm an experienced DW viewer, I realize his movie did in fact suck. He was a good Doctor, and I totally want to see him kick ass in the Time War.
