When love is not love

Something we all need to read - triggery and painful as hell, but important.

She was in a car accident and her family decided to transition her back to male during recovery because that would be 'better'. "He's" now in a coma and is nearing end of life.

self, life, death, psa, love, disability

That is really tragic and horribly offensive that her own family would go against her wishes and try to "transition" her back. *sigh*

I'm horrified the doctors would go along with it, given that the existing transition should make it quite clear what the patient's wishes were.

I have to agree with you doubly there. Being a medical professional myself, I find the Doctor's actions bordering on at the very least negligence, if not full on harm.

Exactly. There's the right of the parents to make choices for the incapacitated patient, and then there's the duty of the doctors to point out that there is no choice to be made here.

Holy (expletive). That's... I don't even know how to respond to that.

(Insert more expletives here).

Right there with you.

- you - need to do the paperwork dear. With your dad the way he is and your mother as, I hate to say it, weak as she is. You need all your ducks in a row for a worst case scenario. Do your will, do the five wishes and make sure you have copies with the people who NEED to know so you are taken care of when the time comes. You maybe young and Goddess forbid anything happens to you, but life happens and we all know it. If you need or want help, let me know. *hugs*

I've spent a long time working among lawyers and would-be lawyers. Often they are pilloried (with good reason). But, honestly, they're right, and so is the author of the piece you link to. Having every sort of legal contingency covered both verbally and in writing may have helped prevent something like this from happening. We don't often know how people will react "for our own good".

Legal back up - something I wish we didnt need, but well then, the whole reason we have lawyers is for this we often wish we didnt need.
