I've noticed this phenomenon throughout life too. Like you, I prefer to expand my horizons and meet new people, and I've done just what you did - and got the glares. I think perhaps instructors/lecturers should mandate that people find a new seat each day, although I bet it would cause a lot of stress for some people.

The same phenomenon can be observed in most churches: many people stake out a particular pew location and sit there for decades. They can get quite irate if someone else occupies "their" territory. I try to move to a different location every Sunday, but its not because I want to meet new people. (I'm not exactly a people person, though I tolerate people well.) I just don't want to be so predictable.
