I know a few soldiers who have permanent nerve damage to their hands and feet because of arctic temps and being exposed. They have to wear gloves even when it's in the 30s or they get a painful tingling in their fingers.

I've gotten contact frostbite a few times. It sears like a flame. Very painful! I once grabbed my tripod without gloves (dumb!) and got frostbite blisters on my palm where it touched the metal. I only touched it for less than a second, as the pain was unbearable - but it was enough to *burn* my skin.

I carried mail for 6 years in Philly. Winters were brutal. I don't envy anyone who has to work outdoors in those conditions. The heat in the truck was practically nonexistent too. :/
