National Coming Out Day

Oct 11, 2006 09:46

I'm pretty darned out. There are few people that I interact with who don't already know that I'm poly, bi (leaning les), transsexual, geeky, a LARPer, and an angel. Heck, even my dad, having been given my journal address, may be fully in the know on those things ( Read more... )

me, coming out

I am curious and of course you have every right to not answer this but...what do you mean by Anti-Civilization?

Civilization, and the ideas that support it and its spread across the world--the agricultural revolution, the notion that there really is only one right way to live(ours!), and the control-paradigm--is without a doubt the worst, most damaging set of memes ever to hit human consciousness. It is setting our culture of billions on a track to destruction, and I think the only escape is to find something new, something better than what civilization has to offer.

I have to say i too am becoming increasingly anti-civilization, as i realize what the idea of "city" implies. A city is a realm where labor is divided and specialized (and therefore where different classes of people become articulated), and which depends for its existence on the subjugation of surrounding countryside to assure its residents of a food source.

That's not to say i'm a Luddite; i'd prefer if we could use our ingenuity to keep the technological gains we've achieved AND get rid of heirarchical exploitation too.

The Luddites were protesting against the very negative changes that the industrial revolution was making to their lives. In that sense, I quite agree with them. I think that our attitude toward technology is very, very dangerous, and has caused great damage as a result. We pretend very fervently that technology is inherently neutral, and we attest with equal zeal that once it is 'out of the box', there is no 'going backwards'.
So, all that to say, yeah, I'm with you there, except that I'm not really sure that all our technology is a 'gain' or that it would be good to keep it all.

I admire your self realization. Most of these i agree with and the others i just don't know enough about to have a stance on. I think i'd like to talk with you about this one day. Definately with you on the guns though. HUgs
