Star Wars Exhibit: Where Science Fiction Meets Reality

Jul 03, 2010 08:45

So last night Mr. Catastrophe and I trekked on up to Huntsville, Alabama, where the Space and Rocket Center's Museum is showing a traveling exhibit of Star Wars props, etc. tied into real-world science. You could built a mini-droid and stuff, and even ride a hoverlift, but I wasn't really all that interested in the "hard science" stuff. As a kid ( Read more... )

It was pretty cool. It's a traveling exhibit, so depending on where you are, maybe it'll come somewhere within driving distance? Huntsville is the first place in the Southeast to get it, but I think it's already made some other stops elsewhere in the U.S. I'm not sure whether the exhibit tours internationally.

Thanks for posting --- there's a Star TREK display about 100 miles away from here --- pronker July 3 2010, 18:01:25 UTC
It's a trip seeing all these things --- and the Vader suit, frozen inside carbonite plasticine, just like my Japanese doll on the display table ---

From the very beginning, that suit gave me the samurai impression effortlessly, then there was that insectoid look to the bottom part of the face that chilled ...

Hmm, that's interesting, I hadn't thought of the samurai thing (perhaps because I don't know that much about samurai in general, or generic conventions regarding them?). But yes, certainly there is a "chill fact" with Vader's mask. The middle part (with the eyes) is genuinely creepy and scary, even detached and sitting behind glass. I was spooked. They used the Christensen version (symmetrical) for RotS, rather than the OT versions.

Is that you with the speeder. I just want to say I love your 20s style dress and hair!

I'd love to have seen all that stuff but hardly anything like that ever comes to NZ. *sigh*

Yeah, it's me. Thank you! I feel like the dress looked better in person than in the pics, but that's kind of the way it goes with anything kind of slinky: curve-hugging if you're moving around, kind of lumpy in a still shot. Anyway, the hair was a hilarious misfire that had my sister laughing so hard she almost fell off her bed. Have you ever seen Robot Chicken Star Wars: Episode II, when Palpatine visits the barber? It was like that.

NZ = New Zealand, right? The exhibit may not come, but you still have bragging rights because LOTR was filmed there. Also I hear there's a fantastic university down there? So keep up that good ol' Kiwi spirit ...
