Anakin looks good, but when doesn't he? I like the texture and downward swoop of the blue streaks, 'freefalling' out of frame.

I talked to Youngest on Friday and he's down a bit about akkadeem, too. He's not done well on a French exam and the prospect of 3 more semesters of the subject is eating at him. In your experience, when a college says, 'you need subject x to fulfill your requirements', how difficult is it to change the subject into something more to your liking?

Anakin is Always Adorable. Heh. Thank you! Feel free to snag if you like, though I suspect you have more icons and manips than you know what to do with already.

Generally speaking, I don't think colleges are very open to changing things - the purpose of the requirements is to standardize education, and witness the fact that I had to use second-year French courses to satisfy my foreign language requirement at Oregon, despite having a Master of Arts in Spanish. They said I had to prove second-year proficiency, and apparently near-native ability just wouldn't count! But I find it hard to believe he'd need French in particular, as opposed to something else that would fill a language requirement - Spanish, German, some schools even substitute computer stuff. And for many universities, the difference between Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science is only determined by the satisfaction of a foreign language requirement, so that might be an option for Youngest. You can give him my email if you think it will help. Goodness knows I' ( ... )

Current program needs a kick in the head, I take it? pronker October 9 2011, 20:47:44 UTC
Gads, I am childlike when it comes to icons, witness just-changed default. They are the pretties, to me.

Thanks for your input -- he would enjoy even substitute computer stuff, I think, as he's built his own computer. I'll pass along the address. I'm hoping he's not getting down in the dumps, as he'd looked forward to the move for years and the honeymoon of moving out is over, you know? And now the grind begins, the maintenance of one's choices that is so. damn. hard. My heart ached for him on Friday. My mom and SIL are going to call him for a chat and I don't give a hoot if this networking of mine squinches his independence -- they are discreet enough. And he has had three years of HS French, but is out of practice and well, university level languages are harder.

Meh. The current program's requirements aren't really the problem. The language requirement is just a translation exercise; I should do fine on it as long as I don't just completely lose my head and pass out or something. But I'm not happy here, pronks. I've been in the higher education system long enough to know that there's something wrong with that -- I loved undergrad, even when the subjects weren't my favorites, I found a lot to like at Alabama in spite of some general wackiness, and even accounting for the snippiness of certain members of the English Department, UO felt cozy. I've never been anywhere I couldn't find something to like. And here … not so much. It's only been a little over a month, so maybe I'll find something soon?

It's easy to get down at the mouth with a move to a new place, especially if you don't make friends in a hurry and you're experiencing some culture shock. Is it cold already there?

It could also be the prof.
