The saga of home ownership

Last week my house's mainline needed cleaning out, as it does two to three times a year due to rabid elm tree roots, but my usual rooter guy was sick. I used a new plumber who couldn't get it cleared and he recc'd a supposedly local plumber by the name of Roto Rooter (saying they had a guy up here, he's seen their truck). I figured this is an emergency (flushing and bathing are top of my priority list) and called Roto Rooter. They're not local (extra $70 just to come up), they took three hours to show up and the total bill for a sewer cam and another clean out job was $530.

There's sand in the line (this is true, their cam is very sharp) and the line (supposedly) needs replacing. They're gonna give me an estimate on Friday, and being that they're a franchise I'm not looking forward to it.

Which led me to searching the phone book for local plumbers for more estimates. When I found with a very similar name, I realized what had happened. The new rooter guy had recc'd the wrong company due to branding (aka if a person asks for "Kleenex" instead of "tissue", or "coke" instead of "soda"). He cost me an extra $200 when I compare prices with the new plumber. Gah!

They had me call the city and have them check their line. The problem seems to be right where it connects, there appears to be a slight sinkhole right on top of it and he pointed out that the entire road has settled along the path of the sewer line. If the road settling screwed with my sewer connection it's not my fault, but in all likely hood the city will try to back out of it. The new plumber told me to make them prove it. The city is coming out tomorrow.

If it is my responsibility it's going to be a big job. My sewer line runs under the city and my water lines, which means hand digging around them. I'm not sure I can handle the stress.

So, how was your day? *exhausted*
